Live at The Everyman

Hatch Theatre Company and The Everyman in association with Once Off Productions are delighted to present the Irish premiere of Caryl Churchill’s 2016 revolutionary play, Escaped Alone, as part of Cork Midsummer Festival.

A sunny afternoon. Sally, Vi and Lena sit in a yard drinking tea, on the other side of the fence stands Mrs Jarrett.

“Don’t look now but there’s someone watching us”

Mrs Jarrett steps off the street and into Sally’s yard. The women sit and talk about family, flying and quantum. A moment, an hour, a day, a week. Time stands still. But as the sun goes down, past and future forces pull, time slides and outside, the apocalypse.

When Mrs Jarrett enters the yard, her presence brings the outside world in and horrific events of the past, unspoken, emerge to the fore.

Intimate and vast, domestic and wild, Churchill’s vision presents a world hurtling towards its own destruction. Escaped Alone viciously satirises contemporary capitalist culture while it celebrates the (often unheard) voices and feelings of aging women, and the resilience it takes to survive 70 years.

In a career spanning over six decades, playwright Caryl Churchill has completely transformed the art of playwriting, and she continues to reinvent the genre with each new creation. Churchill’s plays shout no slogans and force no specific view. Instead, they remain extraordinarily enigmatic and funny.

Starring Ruth McCabe and Anna Healy, Escaped Alone receives its Irish premiere at The Everyman for Cork Midsummer Festival followed by a run at Project Arts Centre, Dublin. Don’t miss this electric new production directed by Annabelle Comyn for Hatch Theatre Company.

Escaped Alone is magnificent. It has all the qualities that mark Caryl Churchill as the greatest living playwright – it’s funny, it’s complicated, and it’s sinister.” – The Huffington Post

“Caryl Churchill’s magnificent new play unleashes an intricate, elliptical, acutely female view of the apocalypse. Revolutionary.” – The Observer, Susannah Clapp
