A showcase of music and spoken word from The Kabin Studio

Live at Elizabeth Fort

The Everyman presented Throwing Shapes Live by The Kabin Studio as part of The Everyman Outdoors at Elizabeth Fort programme.

The Kabin Studio offered an hour of pure Cork entertainment. In 2019, a video of their youngest members singing outside The Everyman went viral and racked up over 250k views; now, in 2021 they took over the stage at Elizabeth Fort!

Throwing Shapes LIVE was an outdoor live performance of music created by the amazing young people at The Kabin Studio. They found creative ways to express themselves through Hip Hop – dealing with loss, having the craic, making beats and throwing shapes – and shared it with audiences. This live event was based on the film Throwing Shapes. The original documentary, which depicted the stories of 7 young artists from Cork city’s northside, evolved from an experiment in creative writing, into a play and then a documentary premiered as part of Cork Midsummer Festival 2021.

Young people are central to The Kabin Studio and have spent many years creating this original material for the purpose of performance. They are pushing the boundaries of what hip-hop is all about.

This live event featured music from young rappers, singers and musicians Alex Pacino Brady, Gatch, Ava Collins, Katelyn O’Sullivan, Kayleigh Russel, Ricky Salmon Anson, Jester, Jamie The King, MC Tiny, MC Sparky, Sully, Cara, Sophie & Chloe and more.

“Cork is the benchmark for youth culture and hip-hop in Ireland, as there is nowhere else where the kids have the influence of what GMC, Music Generation, and others have been doing with The Kabin in Knocknaheeny and The Hut (Youth Work Ireland Cork) in Gurranabraher.” – Stevie G, Echo Live

Throwing Shapes was co-produced by GMCBeats at the Kabin Studio, Graffiti Theatre Company, Cork Midsummer Festival and Music Generation Cork City with support from Arts Council Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Cork City Council’s Arts in Context fund. Creative facilitation team: Niall Cleary (Graffiti Theatre), 0phelia aka Ophelia McCabe, Garry McCarthy (GMCBeats, The Kabin Studio). For details on this project, click here.
