When We Were Young (2016)

About

Presented by The Everyman
6 – 16 APR 2016

From the creator of smash hit show The Sunbeam Girls

Finbar Vaughan leaves Cork in 1947 “to see the entire world.” In 1952, during leave, he meets Tina Furlong, a Wexford girl, who sweeps him off his feet.

When We Were Young is a romantic drama about the beautiful Tina and her romance with Finbar, a handsome sailor. Their romance is intense, leaving her lonely and afraid once he ships out. “If you love me, why do you sail away?” What happens when love interferes with your dreams?

Set in the 1950s, this story follows Tina and Finbar as they navigate life through its ups and downs, like an ebb tide. It is an innocent, charming and ultimately moving story told in an honest, unsentimental and powerful manner. When We Were Young is based on a true story inspired by the writer’s own family history.

“’I had a very happy childhood and then I met him.’ Words spoken by my mother, over lunch in April 2012. When asked to expand she clammed up. She died in May 2012. A diary, and letters, never posted during her lifetime, fell into my hands. My imagination took over. I began to write – Marion Wyatt

“a period piece with plenty of attention to detail, from the old-fashioned perambulator to the costumes.” – Irish Examiner (Read full review HERE)
