Souls, Shadows and Secrets is a new play written and directed by Barry Monahan that gives voice to three of Ireland’s prominent historical figures: Constance Markievicz, Michael Collins and Éamon de Valera.
Set within a personal story narrated by fictional young Irish woman Kate Delaney, the reincarnated personalities will reflect on their political aspirations and their personal relationships. This breathtaking, unique performance integrates live traditional Irish music with Pathé newsreel footage of the period and presents a thrilling moment of Ireland’s history within Kate’s personal story of love, loss and belonging.
Against the backdrop of the personal tale of a young Irish female living in the years between the 1916 Easter Rising and the early years of the Free State, this one-of-a-kind play presents a dramatic exploration of how we remember, and struggle to understand our historical predecessors, and their contributions to our contemporary story. It is a universal tale of recollection, revolution and romance.
Produced by Ciara Chambers, in association with the Irish Film Archive.
“[The performance was] absolutely superb – beautifully drawn script, perfectly understated acting, seamlessly and poetically matched with stunning archive footage. It was historically interesting and visually bewitching.” – Fiona Clark, Director of the Cork International Film Festival
